Photo tips

Getting a good dog photo

  • Crouch to their eye level. Photos taken from above make dogs look small and far away.
  • Use daylight from a window or outdoors. Flash gives dogs glowing eyes.
  • Hold a treat just above your phone to get the head tilt.
  • Dark coats need more light than you think, or the detail turns to shadow.
  • Get the markings that make them unmistakable into the frame: the white sock, the ear that won't stand up.

Sizes

Which size?

For one dog, 16x20 ($95) is a good fit. Two dogs, or a whole beach scene, look better at 18x24 ($109) or larger.

In memory

If your dog has died

Choose the photo that looks most like them. It doesn't need to be recent or sharp. You can try a few photos and styles, and you won't pay anything until it feels right.

Questions

Good to know

I.Can you paint my dog from an old photo?

Yes. It doesn't need to be a recent or perfect photo, just one where you can see their face. Try a few and keep the one you like best.

II.Which style suits my dog?

Oil handles dark, glossy coats well and keeps the color rich. Watercolor is softer, which suits light coats and sunny photos. Previews are free, so try both.

III.Can my dog and I be in the painting together?

Yes. If you're both in the photo, you're both painted.

IV.Is it hand-painted?

No. Your portrait is made with AI from your photo, and you see it before you pay. Our print partner then prints it on stretched canvas with archival, UV-resistant inks and ships it to you.

V.How much is a dog portrait?

Stretched canvas starts at $55 for 8x10, and 16x20, a good size for one dog, is $95. Shipping is included. Those are US prices; you'll see your own currency before you pay.
